Affected by earthquakes and typhoons, Taiwan has experienced many natural disasters and catastrophes, which have also derived from ancient ways of understanding and responding to disasters.

Taiwan is located in the Pacific Rim earthquake zone and in the path of typhoons, and has experienced numerous natural disasters since ancient times. These disasters have profoundly affected the lives and culture of Taiwanese people, and have given rise to rich and diverse folklore and stories of gods and monsters. These stories are not only an important part of Taiwan's cultural heritage, but also reflect ancient people's understanding of natural phenomena, fears of disasters, and ways of coping. However, with the advancement of science and technology and social changes, people have different modern scientific knowledge, response and prevention methods for disasters.

Ancient Customs

In ancient times, people's understanding of natural disasters was mostly combined with myths, religious beliefs and folk customs. For example, earthquakes may be seen as "earth cows turning over", floods may be interpreted as the appearance of red dragons, and typhoons or droughts may be related to punishment from the gods or an imbalance of yin and yang. People often believe that offering sacrifices to gods, exorcising evil spirits, or adjusting feng shui can reduce the occurrence of disasters.

Disaster Prevention

Modern science uses scientific perspectives such as geology, meteorology, and hydrology to explain disasters. For example, earthquakes are caused by plate movements. Potential risks can be estimated by monitoring seismic zone activity. Disaster monitoring and early warning: earthquake monitoring stations, meteorological satellites, river water level sensors and other technological means can provide real-time early warning information.

Book Binding Design

The design of the book cover is inspired by the book binding craftsmanship of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, integrating Taiwanese legends of monsters and disaster themes. The outer bookcase uses cracks to symbolize the destruction and collapse caused by disasters, while the inner layer uses red to emphasize the warning symbol and arouse people's vigilance against disasters. The surface of the book case is engraved with patterns of gods and monsters, highlighting its connection with disasters in legends. Finally, the book is closed with a rope to symbolize the suppression of gods and monsters, echoing the ancient tradition of coping with disasters through beliefs and rituals.
